The Life and Legacy of Lionel Dahmer, Father of Serial Killer Jeffrey Dahmer

An employee at the Medina County Health Department in Ohio reported Dahmer’s death, writes the local newspaper Akron Beacon Journal.

The cause of death is not yet known, but according to The Sun the 87-year-old had been in a nursing home since October. After the death of his wife Shari earlier in January, Dahmer’s health is said to have gradually deteriorated.

Lionel Dahmer was unexpectedly and involuntarily thrown into the international spotlight after his son was arrested in 1991.

Father and chemist

Turbulent

Following The Beacon Journal the marriage must have been turbulent. Lionel moved to a hotel after filing for divorce, alleging gross neglect. Flint moved to Wisconsin with their younger son, leaving Jeffrey alone in the summer of 1978. He killed his first victim, Steven M. Hicks, on June 18 of that year.

After the divorce was finalized in July 1978, Lionel married Jeffrey’s stepmother, Shari, and moved to Medina County, Ohio.

Rage against Netflix

Father and son

In September 2022, the series, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, was released on Netflix.

The series, with several controversies, portrayed, among other things, Jeffrey’s close bond with his father. Father and son, among other things, dissected dead animals together throughout their upbringing.

He had a special interest in dead animals. No one knew that it was a foreshadowing of the terrible things he would do later

Insane

Jeffrey Dahmer had been arrested four times before he was charged as a serial killer in 1991 and admitted to having killed 17 young men and boys.

– How can someone be polite, kind and otherwise quite normal and still do these things unless they are incredibly crazy or insane? the father told the Beacon Journal in 1991, after his son’s arrest.

The murders did not match the boy he remembered as a child. Jeffrey “wasn’t born a monster.”

Lionel visited his son in prison every month before he was beaten to death by a fellow inmate in 1994.
