Russia vetoes UN resolution that prevents deployment of nuclear weapons

NY. Russia on Wednesday vetoed a UN resolution backed by the United States and Japan calling on all nations to prevent a dangerous nuclear arms race in space.

The vote in the Security Council, made up of 15 members, ended with 13 votes in favor, Russia opposed and China abstained. Russia called the measure politicized and assured that it did not go far enough in banning all types of weapons in space.

The resolution would have urged all countries not to develop or deploy nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in space, as prohibited by a 1967 international treaty that includes the United States and Russia, and to accept the need to verify their compliance.

U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said after the vote that Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow has no intention of deploying nuclear weapons in space, but that Russia’s veto raises the question of what can happen. be hiding the government.

Thomas-Greenfield’s announcement of the resolution on March 18 followed the White House’s confirmation in February that Russia had developed “troubling” anti-satellite weapons technology, although such weapons are not yet operational. .

Putin later stated that Moscow has no intention of deploying nuclear weapons in space, and claimed that the country has only developed space capabilities similar to that of the United States.

Russian U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told the Council before the vote that the resolution was “absurd and politicized.”

Nebenzia proposed an amendment to the US-Japan project that said an arms race in space should refer to all types of weapons, not just nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. With 7 votes in favor, 7 against and one abstention, the proposal was rejected, since it did not obtain the minimum of 9 affirmative votes necessary for its approval.
