The level of politeness of Indonesians on the Internet is the worst in Southeast Asia

KOMPAS.com – Microsoft releases its latest Digital Civility Index (DCI) report that measures levels politeness digital world internet users when communicating in cyberspace.

In this research, citizens Indonesia ranks the lowest in Southeast Asia, aka the most disrespectful in the region.

The politeness level of Indonesian citizens deteriorates eight points to 76, where the higher the politeness level the worse.

The first place is occupied by Singaporean netizens who are also ranked fourth globally, with a total of 59 points.

Then Malaysia is in second place with 63 points, followed by the Philippines with 66 points. Thailand is in fourth position with 69 points, followed by Vietnam in fifth with 72 points, right above Indonesia. Microsoft does not provide DCI reports for other Southeast Asian countries.

The decline in politeness level was mostly driven by adult users with a percentage of 68 percent. Meanwhile, adolescence is said to have not contributed to the decline in the level of digital politeness in Indonesia by 2020.

Three factors

There are three factors that influence the risk of modesty in Indonesia. The highest were hoaxes and fraud, which rose 13 points to 47 percent.

Then the hate speech factor increased by 5 points to 27 percent. And the third is discrimination by 13 percent, which is down 2 points compared to last year.

Meanwhile, during the pandemic, four out of 10 respondents said the level of digital politeness in Indonesia had improved. This was driven by a greater sense of togetherness during the pandemic and seeing netizens helping each other mutually online.

However, five out of 10 respondents also admitted to having been involved in bullying, with 19 percent of respondents claiming to be the target of bullying.

Millennials are the generation hardest hit by bullying with a percentage of 54 percent.

Empathy rises

The good news is that this report states that the value of empathy in Indonesia has increased by 11 points. In Indonesia, social media is the biggest contributor in influencing the level of digital politeness. Its contribution is 59 percent.

Then news in the media became the second contributor with a percentage of 54 percent. In addition, the contribution of the level of digital politeness is also driven by government institutions at 48 percent, educational institutions 46 percent, and religious institutions 41 percent.

The 2020 Digital Civility Index is Microsoft’s fifth time. The research, which was conducted in April-May 2020, targeted 16,000 respondents spread across 32 geographies.

Respondents were asked questions for four categories: behavior, sexual, reputation, and personal or harassment.
