The doctor spoke about health problems that will inevitably occur if a person sleeps little.

If you don’t sleep enough or your sleep is constantly interrupted, you won’t be able to fully rest during the night. It’s difficult to concentrate and work the next day. When the problem persists for a long time, health problems may occur, writes “Doctor Peter”

If a person does not sleep enough, the entire body suffers, but especially the nervous, endocrine and immune systems. Ekaterina Demyanovskaya, expert doctor at the Gemotest laboratory, told the online publication what can happen if you limit yourself to night rest.

The brain doesn’t have time to “tidy up”

First of all, sleep plays a crucial role in the normal functioning of the brain. While a person is resting, an active and very important process occurs – the removal of neurotoxins, substances that destroy nerve cells (neurons). Some neurotoxins are formed in the body during metabolism or due to infection, others come from the external environment – with polluted air or medications.

Nighttime “spring cleaning” allows you to neutralize them and safely remove them from the body. If this is not done, the person suffers from headaches, weakness, and anxiety. With prolonged exposure to neurotoxins, chronic disorders develop, such as dementia, the publication notes.

Emotions will overwhelm you

Night rest also plays a key role in regulating emotions. During this time, the brain actively processes the day’s impressions to cope with stress, anxiety and other negative feelings.

When you get enough sleep, a person feels calm and relaxed. Lack of sleep can lead to increased emotional reactivity: it is difficult for a person to control himself, he reacts more sharply to external stimuli, and becomes hot-tempered.

Difficult to solve problems

In the same way, sleep disturbance affects the area of the brain responsible for problem solving and planning. It becomes much more difficult to meet deadlines at work, resist the urge to make spontaneous purchases, and generally act rationally.

Hormone balance is disrupted

Lack of sleep also negatively affects the endocrine system, which through hormones controls all physiological processes of the body – from body temperature and pressure to growth and the ability to reproduce. If there is not enough sleep, this leads to hormonal imbalance and, as a result, disruption of many body systems. For example, an increase in cortisol levels can lead to accelerated wear and tear of the heart muscle, liver, gonads and increased inflammation.

The quality of sleep significantly affects the body’s metabolism, and therefore a healthy weight. First of all, sleep affects the production of appetite regulating hormones: ghrelin (hunger hormone) and leptin (satiety hormone). Lack of sleep can lead to increased ghrelin levels and decreased leptin levels, which in turn makes it difficult for the brain to monitor satiety. This leads to the fact that a person will eat much more than the body requires for normal functioning.

Infections occur more often

A good night’s rest plays a vital role in the functioning of the immune system. During sleep, especially in the deep phase, cytokines are released – molecules that are involved in regulating the immune response. They stimulate the growth and activation of immune cells and help the body quickly respond to infection or tissue damage.

Lack of sleep leads to the fact that infectious diseases, such as acute respiratory viral infections, are more severe, and recovery takes longer, the publication writes.
