Deceased Ukrainian wanted to get to Portugal without a visa

A senior official resigned after a 40-year-old Ukrainian, beaten by immigration officers, died in her department’s detention center.

The head of the Portuguese border service (SEF), Cristina Gatoez, resigned after a scandal that began after a Ukrainian died in a detention center at Lisbon airport, trying to enter the country without a valid visa, writes Reuters.

Igor Gomenyuk, 40, died in March in the SEF detention center. He was taken to the institution by border guards after he refused to board a flight from the country.

Gomenyuk died after being beaten with telescopic batons by three immigration officers. In September, prosecutors charged the officers with murder.

The death of a Ukrainian caused a scandal in Portugal. It resumed on Monday 7 December following unconfirmed reports of SEF plans to install “panic buttons” in places of detention. Human rights activists called this an inadequate response to the incident.

The Interior Ministry, which oversees SEF, said Gatoez had resigned as part of a restructuring plan to separate police and administrative functions in dealing with immigrants and tourists.

Whether the resignation was connected with the death of the Ukrainian, the Ministry did not answer.
