The father of Jozef Chovanec, the passenger who died at Charleroi airport, reacts to the images of the arrest: “It’s horrible”

The father of Jozef Chovanec, the Slovak who died in February 2018 at Charleroi airport during a police intervention, spoke to journalists in Slovakia. “It is horrible what they did. You can’t even treat animals like that. We will do whatever it takes. You saw him. We can’t just sit around doing nothing“, he confided.

The case has been under investigation for two years. The relatives of the victim have joined as a civil party and wish to see the investigation completed. They believe that the attitude of the police had an influence on the death of the thirty-something. Accusations denied by the lawyer of the three suspected police officers (see our article on this subject via the link below).

Recall of facts

On February 23, 2018 at Charleroi airport (BSCA), Jozef Chovanec, 38, posed difficulties for staff when boarding to Bratislava, Slovakia. Federal airport police had been called in to control him, but the passenger rebelled on the tarmac. Placed in a cell in the premises of the federal police, he had given himself violent blows, forcing the police to intervene again to control him. During this operation, the individual had a cardiac arrest before dying a few days later.

The case, under investigation for two years, rebounded on Wednesday with the broadcast of CCTV images of the police intervention. In particular, we can see a policewoman making a Nazi salute or another police officer sitting for 18 minutes on the passenger’s rib cage.
