According to the information, there were no injuries or damage to shops in the area, after the landslide in Thirasia. The moment of the landslide was captured by people on boats.
The experts express their concern about the landslide as it is a rock that is made up of almost the whole of Thirassia and also very large parts of Santorini.
“For us, landslides are a common phenomenon in such a caldera, that is, in a volcano that has successive layers of lava and pyroclastic materials that can be eroded much more easily, so they can slide.”says, speaking to MEGA, the associate professor of geological oceanography and physical geography, Evi Nomikou.
He then said: “It was just a few rocks and it just kicked up a huge dust that didn’t cause any problems. (…) It worries us because we want to highlight the most dangerous parts of the caldera. That is why we have proposed various studies to capture those points which are dangerous in the caldera of Santorini, because it has steep slopes. Don’t forget it’s an active volcano, so it can cause earthquakes”.
As she says: “There are other parts of the caldera that we have marked. That is why the experts are in collaboration with the municipality of Thira and have highlighted the points that need protection”.
