The Disadvantages of Eating Late: New Research Reveals Surprising Findings

A long working day that means you sit at the table late, or perhaps you have more of the Mediterranean mentality of eating late. It sometimes happens that we eat quite late, but that is not very good for our body. New research shows that eating late causes a lot of disadvantages.

Does the time we eat matter? That’s what researcher Nina Vujović wondered. And the answer turns out to be: “Yes.” Eating later in the day doubles the chance of feeling hungry. That sounds logical, but it has an effect on a number of other things. Vujović and her research team published the findings in the scientific The Journal Cell Metabolism.

“We found that eating four hours later makes a big difference to our hunger levels, the way we burn calories after we eat and the way we store fat,” the researcher tells the American CNN. And also previous research showed indicate a link between later eating and weight gain.

Research into the influence of the time of eating

A small group of participants was carefully examined for the study. To do this, the scientists looked for connections between the amount, composition and timing of food, physical activity, sleep, room temperature and light exposure. The participants were in good health and were given a sleep and nutrition schedule for three weeks before the study.
The candidates were divided into two groups. One group ate meals at 8 a.m., noon and 4 p.m., and the other group did so four hours later. So at 12 noon, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. After a few weeks, the participants switched schedules.

Eating later increases hunger and burns calories more slowly

The study results showed that it doubled hunger for those on the later schedule. People who ate later in the day also reported craving more starchy and salty foods and meat and craving less dairy and vegetables.
It also turned out that leptin levels, a hormone that tells us when we are full, were reduced among the later eaters. In addition, the hormone ghrelin, which stimulates appetite, increased in this group. Finally, it turned out that participants who ate later in the day burned calories more slowly. Apparently those traditional Dutch meal times are not so bad after all.
