In the midst of an upturn in infections and deaths associated with the virus, even when the Ministry of Health (Minsa) recognizes the highest numbers of covid-19 cases since the start of the pandemic in 2020, thousands of Nicaraguans continue to participate in massive activities in the that physical distancing is not respected and in many cases a mask is not even used.
This Monday, while in Managua and Carazo thousands of people lined up in search of the vaccine, in Masaya hundreds gathered to venerate their patron saint. Although the mass for the lowering of the image of San Jerónimo – an act that marks the beginning of this festival – was held behind closed doors and with very few attendees, after the religious celebration the image of Tata Chombo was displayed on a platform placed in the atrium of the church of the same name. There, for several hours hundreds of people gathered to venerate the image of who — without being — is considered the patron saint of the Masayas. “The doctor of the poor,” “The one who cures without medicine,” were the shouts amid the hubbub.
The Mayor’s Office of Masaya was not far behind and also organized parallel celebrations with a replica of the image of Tata Chombo that —among other activities and although with fewer participants— visited the emblematic Monimbó neighborhood. Cultural events have also been held, the election of the Beautiful India and the Children’s Queen of the festivities. These activities will run until September 30.
This Tuesday afternoon the anticovid vaccination points for the population aged 30 and over And for this Wednesday Masaya will have seven vaccination posts in the city and in eight of its municipalities they will also be inoculating. After the announcement, a pilgrimage of people mobilized to these points to look for a position and guarantee their dose.
