THE BALL – Umaro Sissoco Embaló says he will take office on the 27th (Guinea-Bissau)

Umaro Sissoco Embaló, given by the National Elections Commission (CNE) as the winner of the presidential elections in Guinea-Bissau, said this Thursday that he will take office on the 27th, with or without the consent of the country’s parliament.

At Bissau airport, returning to the country, after several days of a trip abroad, Umaro Sissoco Embaló warned the leader of the National People’s Assembly, Cipriano Cassamá, that if he does not want to preside over the inauguration ceremony, the act will be done by the deputy President of the organ, Nuno Nabian.

«If the president of the National People’s Assembly (Parliament), Cipriano Cassamá, with all the respect he deserves, does not want to preside over my inauguration, I will summon Nuno Nabian, Satu Camará and deputies to take office anywhere in Guinea-Bissau », Said Sissoco Embaló, who later guaranteed that the ceremony will take place in the capital Bissau, leaving a message for the Supreme Court of Justice (STJ) judges, where an electoral dispute is taking place, due to the appeal filed by Domingos Simões Pereira, who alleges fraud in the second round of the December 29 presidential election.

«Everyone knows that Umaro Sissoco Embaló is the new President of Guinea-Bissau. The Supreme Court can decide what he wants, but I think there are some who will not be here when it comes to dividing the money they received … », he said, referring to the judges of that judicial body.

The politician promised to show audio recordings to prove his accusation and reaffirmed his determination to be the effective President from the 27th.

“After that, Guinea-Bissau, once and for all, will have a single head”, underlined Embaló, stressing that “sometimes it is necessary to make war to have peace”.

“Who does not know that I won the elections that go to the Supreme Court if they want, that even go to The Hague (Holland)”, stressed Sissoco Embaló, leaving an exhortation to the military, in the sense of taking into account that from now on it is him who rules, as supreme commander of the Armed Forces.

The CNE gave victory to the candidate supported by the Movement for Democratic Alternation (Madem G-15), Umaro Sissoco Embaló, with 53.55% of the vote, with Domingos Simões Pereira, supported by the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), obtained 46.45%, which motivated an appeal to the STJ.

On Wednesday, Simões Pereira’s legal team filed an appeal with the Supreme Court seeking the annulment of the elections, alleging irregularities in the process and fraud.

The STJ has not yet ruled on the request.
