The 29 W adapter incompatible with the MagSafe Duo charger

The MagSafe Dual Charger, also known as MagSafe Duo, is not compatible with Apple’s 29W power adapter. We learn indeed in a technical sheet published on the Apple website: you must use either the 20 W charger to 25 €, or the 30 W charger at 55 € for optimum charging speed. The reason for this incompatibility is technical: the adapter is designed to operate at a minimum of 15 W with specific profiles (5V / 3A or 9V / 1.67A) within the framework of the USB Power Delivery 3.0 standard. Apple’s 29W adapter, which was included with some MacBook models, for example, predates this standard.

This datasheet teaches us another small limitation of the MagSafe Duo charger. It must be connected to the mains before placing an iPhone on it: “This allows MagSafe to verify that it can deliver maximum power in a safe manner”. If the iPhone was placed on the charger before it was plugged in, “Simply remove your iPhone from the MagSafe Duo charger, wait three seconds, and put it back in order to benefit from maximum power again”.
