The US state of New York, which was particularly hard hit by the corona pandemic, has 779 deaths in one day, as many victims as never before during the crisis. This puts the number of deaths in the 20 million state at a total of 6,268, said Governor Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday at his daily press conference. “That number of deaths will continue to rise,” he said.
Cuomo ordered the flags to be hung at half-mast in the state. He compared the situation with the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, in which almost 2,800 people died in New York. He never thought that he would see such a major catastrophe in his life again, said the governor.
Nevertheless, Cuomo affirmed that the far-reaching exit restrictions worked, and this is still evident in the declining number of newly admitted to the hospital. However, this does not mean that the measures can now be relaxed. “If we change something, the curve will change.”
The worst is not over yet
One is not yet out of the woods. After reports of higher numbers of infected people among African-Americans and Latinos, Cuomo announced that it would carry out more tests in the relevant communities.
Meanwhile, there is mounting evidence that there could be a higher number of unreported deaths in New York because many people die without medical treatment at home. On normal days, about 25 dead people have to be fetched from their homes in the metropolis, said the senior general of the National Guard, Joseph Lengyel, on Wednesday. “These numbers have increased significantly and 150 people a day have to be taken to the morgue.”
New York is currently the epicenter of the crisis, with more than 140,000 confirmed cases in the US. There are now more than 400,000 registered infections and around 13,000 deaths across the country. This came out on Wednesday noon (local time) from data from the University of Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. In the USA, a country with around 330 million inhabitants, there are significantly more known infections with the Sars-CoV-2 virus than in any other state in the world. The numbers can only be compared to a limited extent due to the different test rate and a high number of unreported cases.
