Hüsler has won three Challengers so far – his greatest successes.

Marc-Andrea Hüsler is a Swiss professional tennis player – on the move – and 24 years old. At that age, Roger Federer already had around 30 ATP titles in the bag, six Grand Slam victories. It had been number 1 in the world for a year and stayed that way for almost three more years in a row.
–
Hüsler’s greatest successes are three tournament victories at Challenger level, two of which he was able to realize this season. For this he has the high school diploma from the sports high school in Zurich, which is why he could only give full throttle on tennis courts when he was 19. But things have been steadily improving for him since then. He is currently in world number 148, which enables him to participate in the qualification field of the Australian Open for the first time. “2021 will be groundbreaking,” said Hüsler at a meeting at the Zurich tennis facility in Lengg, “it’s going well, and I’m even in the main field in Paris. I know it is possible. ”

Marc-Andrea does not allow himself to be blinded by exceptional appearances like Federer. “Everyone follows their own rhythm,” he says. As long as you are hungry, age does not play a major role. «My way has definitely advantages, because I am not exhausted at all. Had I started when I was 15, I would have traveled a lot for almost ten years now, maybe I would have almost seen it. I know many examples of successful juniors who were not rewarded for doing without in youth. “

Once not far from Medvedev
When he says this, his eyes fall on a screen in the Lengger fitness room, where a replay of the ATP finals in London is on. Daniil Medvedev, 24, winner of the season finale, plays there. Doesn’t he think of comparisons when he sees the Russian world number 4? “In any case, I don’t doubt myself. A few years ago I lost 4: 6, 4: 6 to Daniil on a future in Italy, it wasn’t special. ” He has also played against Karen Katschanow and Yannik Sinner. “You do a lot of things right, but you also bet on professional much earlier than I did.”
–
Hüsler has never been a premier. “At 12 I was nowhere, I had my first success at the Swiss Championship when I was 14 – but I messed up six match points in the final.” Two years later he was U16 champion, then three times U18 runner-up. After all: with comparatively little training effort, Marc-Andrea was always in the top five of the Swiss junior rankings up to the Matura.

“I have some talent,” he suspects. There is also the advantage of being left-handed and tall. Serve and volley, as celebrated by his role model Roger, are always an option. “But that also involves a lot of risk,” he knows. He currently has the self-confidence that is needed for this. Now it’s all about Marc-Andrea to keep his good starting position in the top 100. “For more, I have to do more,” he knows.

Saving is not currently the trend
A further rise would also come in handy financially. He is currently budgeting around 100,000 francs a year. He manages this with the help of the tournament income, some sponsors, lucrative interclub assignments at NLA master TC Seeblick. And his parents, a psychotherapist and a teacher, who bought him insurance and right to live at home in Rüschlikon.
–
But this is not the time to save. In order to collect more ATP points, Hüsler, who trains in this country under Roman Valent, Alexander Sadecky and pastry coach Pascal Kaiser, travels with the Austrian coach Julian Knowle. If the success comes, he will surely soon add a management to his family team. There have already been interested parties, but this is a difficult time to find sponsors, says Marc-Andrea. “Nobody is investing a lot of money right now.”

Yes, the Corona year didn’t make it easy for Marc-Andrea Hüsler either. But creative – this is how the late bloomer used the months without competition to learn to play the piano. Online in self-study and with a little help from his girlfriend, who has been playing for a long time. On the other hand, his favorite, memorized track “Mad World” by Gary Jules doesn’t sound bad at all. On the contrary: “Crazy World” sounds extremely suitable for the tennis high-flyer.
