David Alaba is the best central defender in the German Bundesliga for the specialist magazine “kicker”. In the traditional annual ranking, the Viennese have been number one several times, this year for the first time in his new position in the center of defense. Before that, the 28-year-old had been rated as the best defensive winger four times.
The new coach Hansi Flick made Alaba head of defense in the fall. The ÖFB star quickly got along with it. “In this role, Alaba is convincing all along the line, because he organizes the defense with his commands, acts quickly and prudently, runs many balls and plays precise passes,” argued the “kicker”.
With three German world champions, Alaba was placed in the second highest category “International Class”, including (“In the wider circle”) three other Austrian team players: Martin Hinteregger (Eintracht Frankfurt), Philipp Lienhart (Freiburg) and Stefan Posch (Hoffenheim).
