Teenage Graffiti Vandals Arrested by Police in Seoul After Defacing Cultural Sites

They are suspected of spray-painting information about illegal video sharing sites on three locations, including near Yeongchumun Gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace and on the wall of the National Palace Museum, at approximately 1:42 a.m. on the 16th. The area damaged by graffiti reached 44m.

It is known that throughout the time they committed the crime, unidentified Mr. A was in real-time contact with Lim and gave instructions. It is said that specific instructions were given, including the area to be graffitied, the route of movement, and the time of the crime.

Mr. A instructed them to graffiti not only the wall of Gyeongbokgung Palace but also the statue of King Sejong. In fact, after graffitiing Gyeongbokgung Palace, Lim and Yang Kim moved near the statue of King Sejong, but reportedly refused, saying, “I’m scared because there are police.”

Lim first contacted unidentified person A in a Telegram group room on the 11th. It was through a post posted by Mr. A on Telegram saying, ‘If you want to work, I will give you 3 million won.’ It is reported that he introduced himself as an official of an illegal streaming site and asked to be called ‘Team Leader Lee.’

After instructing Mr. Lim on the location and method of committing the crime, Mr. A sent a total of 100,000 won to the account twice, 50,000 won each, but after the crime was completed, he reportedly said, “I will hide 5.5 million won somewhere in Suwon” and cut off contact. . When the police started investigating, Mr. A said, “I think the two of them are ruined. It is said that he also sent a message saying, “Run away.”

Lim and Kim, who returned home after committing the crime, were caught by the police three days later on the 19th. Mr. Lim was arrested at his residence in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, at around 7:08 pm on the 19th, and Ms. Kim was also arrested at her home nearby at around 7:25 pm on the same day. The two claimed to be in a romantic relationship and admitted to the crime.

Jongno Police Station in Seoul applied for an arrest warrant for the arrested Lim on the night of the 20th on charges of violating the Cultural Heritage Protection Act.

Ms. Kim, who was arrested along with Mr. Lim, was released around midnight that day, considering her level of involvement in the crime. It was found that Yang Kim planned the crime and accompanied Lim, but he did not directly participate in the graffiti.

The police are tracking Mr. A through the account where the deposit was deposited and the Telegram account.

Meanwhile, the interrogation of the suspect (substantive warrant review) before Lim’s arrest will be held at the Seoul Central District Court at 10:30 a.m. on the 22nd.
