Sunset Park Neighbors Help Make Vaccine Appointments

Pamela Avilés, a Sunset Park neighbor, was on her way home when she came across a place where – in less than five minutes – they scheduled an appointment for the coronavirus vaccine: “It is very helpful because I tried in the morning of making an appointment and it took them a long time and they didn’t give me the appointment, “he said.

And it is that the community organization Academy of Medical Services and Public Health was on 41st Street helping area residents to get an appointment for the vaccine. This entity has an agreement with the municipal government, in which they ensure a number of daily appointments for residents of the community.

Mon Yuck Yu, executive vice president of the Academy of Medical Services and Public Health, comments: “We are collaborating with the city to put 50 spaces for members of our community to do the vaccine. We will have tables in different parts of the community. to make appointments. “

So far, this organization has already scheduled more than 1,000 appointments for residents of this area and they hope that next week they will be able to schedule another 400.

This Saturday they will be providing their support in their offices at 5603 Third Avenue from 3:30 pm to 5 pm. And from April 14 to 17, they will be visiting businesses located between Fourth and Eighth avenues during the afternoon, to reach more people interested in the vaccine.

Since some inhabitants of the area have not been able to register due to their lack of computers. Such is the case of Yesenia de Jesús, who a year ago was very ill with the coronavirus: “I and my husband got very sick that we couldn’t even breathe. I still have difficulty breathing.”

On Friday, this entity joined the Voces Ciudadanas organization and the office of councilman Carlos Menchaca and the ombudsman, Jumanee Williams, to also distribute food. And here the volunteers speak Mandarin, English and Spanish.
