Sugar Levels of Diabetes Patients Rise during the Covid-19 Pandemic, Stress Becomes a Trigger

JAKARTA, iNews.id – Covid-19 pandemic that has not ended, affects the health of people with diabetes. A study in India showed their blood sugar levels also increased.

The main reason for high sugar levels is stress hormones such as cortisol. When the Covid-19 outbreak began to spread across the country in March this year, the blood glucose levels of diabetics began to increase simultaneously.

This research was conducted by Beato, a digital ecosystem to help with the procedures for diabetes care and management. The Indianexpress page reports that the anxiety and pressure arising from the lockdown as well as the spread of Covid-19, as well as the lack of access to health, have led to an increase in blood sugar levels of up to 20 percent in 8,200 diabetic patients across India who were respondents of the study.

The average fasting sugar level before the pandemic occurred in January to mid-February was 138 mg / dl. While in March to May 2020, blood glucose levels of diabetics began to increase to 165 mg / dl.

Beato found the key factors causing the increase in blood sugar levels are stress, anxiety, disruption in daily life, restrictive regimens and quarantine at home.

Areas that show a greater surge in blood sugar levels are regions in North, West and North East India. The analysis links the increase with how this situation is usually in the form of increased consumption of rice and carbohydrates.

The report underlines that stress and anxiety are “active triggers in increasing blood sugar levels”, daily management for diabetics is very important in tracking and managing chronic disorders.
