Last month, our country had 359,538 jobseekers who are entitled to benefits fully unemployed, according to the latest figures from the RVA. That is 50,959 or 16.5 percent more than in May last year. According to the RVA, this is the first increase in almost four years and also a very significant increase.

The increase is greatest in percentage terms among young people under the age of 25 (+27.9 percent), but there is also a significant increase among those aged 25 to 49 (+20.8).
The increase is greatest in Flanders (+22.1 percent), after Wallonia (+13.9) and Brussels (+10.6).
Temporary unemployment also rose sharply in May, with explicit reference to the corona crisis. According to the RVA, at least 834,397 people from 105,390 different companies already received payment for temporary unemployment in May. The figures for this month are not yet complete, however, the NEO estimates that 930,000 people will eventually receive compensation for temporary unemployment.
Their number goes down slightly. In the months of March and April of this year, this concerned 958,650 and 1,149,717 people respectively, from 123,139 and 132,407 employers.
