Study Reveals Excessive Niacin Consumption Increases Cardiovascular Disease Risk

Al-Marsad newspaper: A recent medical study revealed that consuming excessive amounts of niacin, a B vitamin, can lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Scientists from the Cleveland Clinic explained in a recent study, the results of which were published in the journal Nature Medicine, that they observed a strong link between 4PY, a hydrolyzed metabolite of excess niacin, and heart disease.

According to Stanley Hazen, director of the Center for Microbiome and Health at the Cleveland Clinic and lead author of the study, the results reached are very important, because they revealed a previously unknown cause of cardiovascular disease.

Hazen pointed out: “We will be able to conduct diagnostic tests, which will pave the way for confronting the effects resulting from the excess of the decomposed element of niacin,” according to the UPI news agency.

The researchers found that one out of every four people in the sample included in the study, which included 2,331 people, who suffered from cardiovascular problems, received a very large amount of “niacin,” which stimulated the body’s production of the harmful metabolite 4PY.
