Study proposes that Epsilon variant of the coronavirus is resistant to Pfizer and Moderna vaccines

The B.1427 or Epsilon variant was detected for the first time in March of this year in the United States and has been recorded in at least 34 other countries.

A recent study published by the specialized journal Science states that the variant of SARS-Cov-2, Epsilon (or B.1.427), is resistant to Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

The study analyzed the plasma of people vaccinated with Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna, detecting that the Epsilon variant reduced the effectiveness of the vaccine against the virus mutation by between 2 and 3.5 times.

This variant was first detected on March 5 of this year in California, United States, and has subsequently been registered in 34 other countries. Currently for the World Health Organization (WHO) is a variant of interest and not a worrying one for example, Delta.

A variant is considered to be of interest when it is identified as a cause of community transmission or if it has been detected in multiple countries, both parameters met by the Epsilon variant.

What is a variant?

As explained by the Chilean Society of Infectology, a variant is a mutation that occurs in the virus over time. As the virus infects people, it has a chance to replicate its genome, and each time it does, there is the possibility of mutations.

The main mutations of importance are generated in the spike (S) proteins, which have shown high levels of viral load, replication and transmissibility.

In June of this year the first case of the Delta variant in Chile, after the arrival of a 43-year-old woman from the United States.
