NDR 1 Lower Saxony

Storm low “Sabine” sweeps over Lower Saxony and has given people extremely uncomfortable hours since Sunday. Roof cladding hurls through the air, trees are pulled out with force, they tip over on streets and tracks. Until Monday, the weather situation moves across the country, until then the severe weather warning of the German Weather Service (DWD) applies. Storms with hurricane-like gusts can occur in the interior, as the meteorologists report. A wind force of 12 is expected on the North Sea coast, i.e. wind speeds of around 115 kilometers per hour. In the meantime, Deutsche Bahn has announced that it will stop long-distance transport nationwide, starting in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Emsland: IC rams fallen tree

In the afternoon there was a first incident in rail traffic in Emsland: an intercity train drove into a fallen tree near Salzbergen. Around 300 passengers were stuck on the open route for two hours until the journey was finally continued and ended prematurely in Rheine (NRW). A tree fell near Papenburg on a regional train of the Westphalia Railway, nobody was harmed, as the city of Papenburg announced.

Even before “Sabine” met Lower Saxony, the railroad had recommended that customers postpone their planned trips. On Sunday afternoon, the company initially stopped long-distance transport to the North Sea coast – later also numerous regional connections such as between Bremen and Norddeich, Bremen and Osnabrück, Bodenfelde and Nordhausen. Later the private rail operators also provided metronome and Erixx their connections because of the storm. Which routes of the Deutsche Bahn are affected find out in the company’s offer.

Airport: Some machines don’t start

“Sabine” also results in flight cancellations. Hanover and Bremen airports canceled a number of flights. In Hanover, machines to Paris, Amsterdam, Munich and Frankfurt / Main remained on the ground, as the airport announced. As a precaution, the airline Eurowings has its own Flight operations interrupted.

Road closures due to fallen trees

The ADAC advises against unnecessary car journeys due to the storm’s low. Those who still have to drive should plan more time, drive slowly and adjust to blocked roads, says a spokesman. Just like in the Harz Mountains: According to the police, the B498 was temporarily blocked in both directions between Goslar / Oker and Clausthal / Altenau. In many other parts of the country, helpers have to move again and again. Most of the time it’s about fallen trees that block roads. Storm-related disabilities also occur on the motorways in Lower Saxony because branches blow on the road.

Ferry traffic restricted to the East Frisian Islands

The storm “Sabine” also poses great challenges for the people on the coast. Ferry connections to the East Frisian Islands have been discontinued since Sunday. The trips to Wangerooge, Borkum and Norderney are affected. The ferry between Neuharlingersiel and Spiekeroog also left earlier on Sunday because of “Sabine”. The evening departure from Baltrum to the mainland was canceled. Ferry traffic was also discontinued between Langeoog and Bensersiel. The shipping companies also expected delays for Monday and Tuesday.

School drop out on Monday in Goslar

At some schools in Lower Saxony the school will also drop out on Monday due to the weather. The district of Goslar, for example, announced that lessons will be dropped in all schools, including vocational schools. You can read more about failures in the Offer of the traffic management center Lower Saxony.
