Sony’s sacrifice behind free PS5 games

Jakarta

Sony every month offers free games for users PS5exactly customer PlayStation Plus.

To deliver the game, it turns out that Sony has spent a lot of money. This was revealed when a game developer named Snail Games registered its documents for an initial public offering (IPO).

Snail is an independent game developer and publisher whose famous game is Ark: Survival Evolved. It could be said that this is their flagship game, because his name is mentioned at least 40 times in the document.

According to Snail, in the fiscal year ended December 31, 2021, most of their revenue came from selling games digitally, via platforms such as Steam, Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.

But even more interesting, in November 2021 it was revealed that Sony paid Snail $ 3.5 billion to bring the Ark game for free to PlayStation Plus subscribers for five weeks.

The contract also stipulates that Ark must reach the target number of downloads (an unspecified amount) so that the money from Sony can be shelled out. Yup, payment was made to present Ark for free starting March 1, 2022, and Snail claimed to be able to hit the download goal in just one day.

So, in other words, Sony spent that $ 3.5 million without getting any revenue in return. They spend so much money hoping to keep PlayStation Plus subscribers happy.

Of course, Sony isn’t the only one doing this. In the same document it is also revealed that Microsoft has also paid some money to bring Ark to Game Pass.

Oh yeah, keep in mind that this $ 3.5 million is just the money Sony paid for a game. While PlayStation Plus subscribers can get up to five games each month.
