Soccer. Coronavirus: Italian football union criticizes decision

The Italian football players’ union (AIC) tried on Tuesday discriminatory and illogical the government’s decision to allow only the resumption of training for individual sports athletes. AIC expresses its perplexity and surprise at the government’s decision on how to resume sport in Italy, the union chaired by former international midfielder Damiano Tommasi wrote in a statement.

On Sunday evening, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte authorized from 4 May the resumption of individual training for athletes practicing individual sports. For collective sports, the recovery has been fixed the best as of May 18, according to Minister of Sports Vincenzo Spadafora.

It seems discriminatory, even more than illogical, to resume activity in sports centers for license holders of individual disciplines and not to allow individual training for professional footballers and other licensees in team sports, adds the AIC.

The union also considers that this choice risks to lead to an aggravation and not a limitation of the risk and says hope rapid government intervention to correct what he calls obvious distortion.

The clubs of Serie A, the Italian first division championship, voted unanimously last week for a continuation of the season, interrupted on March 9 by the progression of the epidemic of coronavirus. On Tuesday, French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe announced that no football match could be played in France before August, suggesting a final end to the Ligue 1 season.
