Sixteen planes land on closed runway at Schiphol

Recordings from the control tower and data from Flightradar24, which has analyzed Aviation news media partner NH News, show that the Ryanair-Boeing 737-800 was 50 meters above Zwanenburgbaan when the pilots were ordered to continue. Sixteen aircraft would have already landed on the runway that had not yet been released by Schiphol.

After the restart, the course still opened. According to LVNL, there has been no risk of collision.

Safety pin still in landing gear
This miscommunication took place on Saturday, January 18 and happened just after a Transavia aircraft occupied the Buitenveldertbaan, because there was still a safety pin in the landing gear.

That plane had departed from Ivalo (Finland) when the crew were told above Sweden that they had taken off with a pin in the nose wheel. The ground staff in Ivalo had probably forgotten to remove the safety pin.

Unfortunate moment
The Boeing was able to land safely at Schiphol, but Transavia’s technical service had to enter the Buitenveldertbaan to remove the pin. As a result, the runway had to close and the Zwanenburg runway was made ready for landings.

The news comes at an unfortunate moment, now that Schiphol is again under attack about security at the airport. For example, coalition parties D66 and ChristenUnie want the Dutch Safety Board to re-investigate security at the airport before further growth can be achieved.

The parties are of the opinion that Schiphol, after an earlier critical report from the Dutch Safety Board, has done too little to reduce the number of incidents.

Update: Legal steps
Air Traffic Control the Netherlands (LVNL) is putting a great deal of pressure on the public broadcaster NH Nieuws to adjust the above news item about a blunder of the service at the beginning of January. LVNL wants NH Nieuws to take a video from the website, in which you can hear that the air traffic control at Schiphol lets aircraft land on a closed runway.

However, NH Nieuws considers the social and journalistic importance of this excerpt to be of such high value that we do not want to remove it. The security situation at Schiphol is an important topic, is also apparent from the many concerned reactions under the article. Many local residents have been worried for years about the growth and the associated safety risks. The Dutch Safety Board also warned about this.

It is striking that the LVNL is very selective in demanding the removal of fragments between the control tower and pilots. A fragment in which King Willem Alexander (who is also a KLM pilot) can be heard was even labeled as a ‘nice fragment’ by a communication advisor from the organization. The fragment was broadcast on several television programs.

Last month, the LVNL admitted a vlogger to the control tower, which also made audio fragments of a restarting aircraft.

“We are awaiting the legal steps, so far we are relying on free news gathering and the social interest,” said Jacky de Vries, Head of News at NH. “This is not just about air traffic control, but about the safety of local residents.”

“As journalists in general and NH News in particular, we serve that public interest. The fragment we use is part of the news gathering and supports the story. We have not heard any arguments from the LVNL that removing the fragment is more important but we will of course remain open to all arguments. “
