Significant Weather Changes Ahead: Red Warning Level Declared in Some Areas

The warm, late summer weather will be over for the time being in the next few days. In some places a red warning level was even declared.

On Thursday there will still be bright sunshine in large parts of Austria. In Vienna there is still a very warm summer day at the end of September with around 28 degrees. There will probably be a record in Innsbruck this year. 16 summer days have already been recorded there this September. The record is 19 summer days in 1961. There are likely to be four or five more by the end of the month.

If you look a little further west it is significantly colder. Not only that, there is even a significant change in the weather ahead. Because on Thursday the Alpine region will increasingly come under the influence of an extensive low with a core over the British Isles. The experts at the UBIMET severe weather center warn that there will be larger amounts of rain regionally.

In Vorarlberg, the warning level is red from Thursday night to Friday evening! There are warnings for the south of Tyrol and Salzburg.

The forecast in detail

Am ThursdayLocal fog and high fog fields on the north side of the Alps will clear up by mid-morning and the sun will often shine with only harmless clouds. From the Brenner over Upper Carinthia to the Mur-Mürz valley, however, clouds predominate and individual showers fall, especially in the Carnic Alps area. On the main Alpine ridge and in the east there are strong, foehn southerly winds, and in exposed locations such as Innsbruck there are also stormy gusts.

The Freitag runs in two parts: from Vorarlberg to Upper Carinthia the clouds dominate and at times heavy rain falls. Otherwise it will remain dry for the time being and the sun will often still shine, especially in the east and southeast. During the afternoon the rain will also spread to the north, with isolated showers or thunderstorms moving through in the northeast. The wind in the southeast will be moderate to brisk from a southwesterly direction.

Rather gloomy weekend

The Saturday is densely cloudy and often wet. From Lower Carinthia to Burgenland it rains heavily at times and is interspersed with thunderstorms. Longer dry periods are likely to be expected in the afternoon from Lake Constance to the Mühlviertel. The wind blows weak to moderately or, on the eastern edge of the Alps, briskly from the northwest in the evening.

Am Sunday From the start there will be thick clouds in the south and southeast. From the Karawanken to Central Burgenland, one or two drops still fall. The western Northern Alps will also start the day with residual clouds. Here, however, things lighten up as the day progresses and a friendly mix of sun and clouds sets in from Vorarlberg to the Waldviertel. In the southeast, however, the clouds remain tenacious. In the Alps there is a light foehn wind and from the Weinviertel to southern Styria the northerly wind blows briskly to strong, locally also stormy.
