Scientists have developed a new method of contraception for men

New nanomaterials reduce the likelihood of paternity by at least 30 days

The use of nanoparticles and magnetic fields opens up new possibilities for controlling male reproductive function.

Chinese scientists have developed reversible magnetic contraceptives for men, reports ACS.

It is noted that in men, compared to women, there is little choice of contraceptives – condoms or vasectomy, which is difficult to reverse.

Experts set out to expand the ability to control male reproductive function and create a safe and reversible contraceptive.

As you know, wearing too tight trousers or underwear causes an increase in the temperature of the testicles, which negatively affects the sperm count in men. Using this knowledge, previous research has focused on intensely heating nanomaterials that are injected into the testes as a birth control agent.

However, injections were painful, heating could damage the skin, and most nanomaterials tested were not biodegradable.

Scientists from Weihua Ding, Fei Song and their colleagues focused on developing a safe and effective magnetic-thermal approach to male contraception that does not need to be injected directly into the testes.

They tested iron oxide nanoparticles, which are harmless to the body and can be controlled by a magnetic field, in mice.

Repetitive doses of citric acid-coated nanoparticles were injected into the bloodstream in male rodents for two days, and the nanomaterials were directed to the testes using magnets. The area was then exposed to a magnetic field for 15 minutes.

The nanoparticles heated the testes to a temperature of 40 degrees, suppressing spermatogenesis for 30 to 60 days. After this time, reproductive functions were gradually restored.

The findings open up new opportunities for effective and long-term male contraception, the study authors said.

Earlier it was reported that American scientists created an oral contraceptive for women, which is enough to take once a month.
