“It is sad to see poor people bury their loved ones in a disrespectful way,” Sonu Chandel, a boat owner on the Ganges River, told AFP.

Chandel said the situation was getting worse when the water level of the Ganges River rose over the weekend.

As a result, the cemetery opened and about 150 bodies were swept away by the water until they floated in the Ganges River.

“There was always a fear of the body hitting my oars or boat when the water level rose,” said Chandel, who also works as a crematorium worker.

Meanwhile, other Indians also highlighted the impact the bodies had on the environment around the Ganges River.

A resident who lives near the Ganges River, Allahabad, said he was worried that the bodies could contaminate the river which had previously been named the most contaminated waters.

“This can cause serious illness. The government should think about it and only they can take action,” Allahabad said.

Before the pandemic, many residents scattered ashes from the bodies of family members in the Ganges River. Families who cannot afford to hold cremations also usually lay their bodies in the river.

However, the number of corpses in the Ganges River has increased rapidly in line with the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in recent months.

The authorities even dispatched a patrol team to transport the bodies floating in the Ganges River.

“The flow was very strong and the number of bodies was almost the same as fish now,” a police officer told AFP.
