Stockholm: Sweden says Russia is spreading false claims of Koran burning to kill its chances of joining NATO. Sweden is awaiting the approval of Turkey and Hungary for NATO membership.
Russian state-controlled media outlets RT and Sputnik published several articles in Arabic falsely claiming that the Swedish government supported the burning of the Koran, the Defense Ministry agency said. Since late June, nearly a million similar posts have been published in Arabic and other languages.
Iraqi citizens Salwan Momika and Salwan Najem burned the Quran outside the parliament. This caused outrage and exacerbated the diplomatic crisis between Sweden and Muslim countries around the world. Michael Ostlund, a spokesman for the Psychological Defense Agency, said states and Islamic extremists were among those spreading disinformation.
They repeat narratives that Sweden supports Koran burning, that Sweden is an Islamophobic country and hostile to Islam. Russia is doing these things to make Sweden look bad and to make it difficult to join NATO. RT and Sputnik channels wrote many articles against us in Arabic. He said that because they are state-run channels, the Russian government knows about those articles. The constant spread of false information makes people believe too much.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson said the country was being used by outsiders as a platform to spread hateful messages. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Sweden and Finland started trying to join NATO. Turkey is the second largest military power in NATO. Sweden’s current action will therefore create a crisis for NATO accession.
Earlier this year there was a protest in front of the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm. The Quran was also burnt in this protest. Protesters then set fire to the Swedish national flag at the Swedish Embassy in Angara, Turkey in retaliation.
