The US is threatening a new deadly nuclear weapon days after China announced an expansion of its nuclear arsenal – 2024-05-07 18:08:35

/ world today news/ The United States is developing plans for a new nuclear weapon, 24 times more powerful than the one dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The proposed B61-13 nuclear gravity bomb would cost £569m to produce and with a blast radius of 3.5 miles could wipe out a city of a million almost instantly.

With a 360-kiloton blast capacity and a range of 6,000 miles, the fallout would have been significantly more devastating than that of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The bombs dropped on Japan had a power of only 15 kilotons, but they killed nearly 200 thousand people.

The new weapon has not yet been approved by Congress, but is expected to receive the support of the Republican Party.

A Pentagon spokesman said: “B61-13 will strengthen our deterrence of our adversaries and the security of allies and partners by providing the president with additional options to act against certain more difficult and iconic military targets.”

America’s new nuclear bomb will be delivered by the high-tech B-21 Raider stealth bomber and will be able to destroy underground targets with greater accuracy.

The announcement came just days after China announced it would double its nuclear arsenal to nearly 1,000 warheads.

Washington currently has about 1,400 nuclear warheads, while Russia has about 1,500. However, China plans to double its current stock of 500 warheads within a decade.

China has also announced that it is developing a new intercontinental ballistic missile system capable of hitting the US mainland.

US Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy John Plumb referred to China’s recently announced nuclear ambitions in a statement that read: “Today’s announcement reflects the changing environment for our security and the growing threats from potential adversaries.” The United States has a responsibility to continue to assess and build the capability we need, and to assure our allies that we are able to provide credible deterrence and, if necessary, respond to strategic attacks.”
