Russell Crowe receives Crystal Globe at Karlovy Vary Film Festival

Australian actor and musician Russell Crowe arrived in Karlovy Vary already on Wednesday afternoon, two days before the start of the local film festival. On Friday, at the opening of the 57th edition of the show, he will receive the Crystal Globe for his contribution to world cinema.

The actor landed at the Karlovy Vary airport before four in the afternoon, then went to check in at the Pupp hotel.

Already from the plane, the fifty-nine-year-old Crowe took a picture of the view of the nearby Andělská Hora, which then published on Twitter with the question “Where am I now?”. A little while later, when he settled in, he noted: “My God, Karlovy Vary is beautiful.” Subsequently in tweeting carried on on a Wednesday evening while walking around town.

Earlier on his account, Crowe teased a performance with his band, which will be part of the opening night. “This is a free concert. No ticket needed. Last show of the tour. Get your butt up and get on the bus,” wrote the actor, who has 2.8 million followers on Twitter alone.

Crowe will be seen on the red carpet before the opening ceremony on Friday. In the evening, he will sing in front of the Thermal Hotel with the band Indoor Garden Party.

In his honor, the Karlovy Vary Festival will present a naval drama from the time of the Napoleonic Wars Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World, which was filmed by Peter Weir in 2003. Crowe was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role as Captain Jack Aubrey.

Crowe is from Wellington, New Zealand, but has lived in Australia since childhood. He started his acting career as a six-year-old in television and theater. From 1989, he acted first in the Australian films The Crossing, Důkaz or Roomper Stomper. He won two local academy awards: for a supporting role in the film Evidence and for best actor for the title Roomper Stomper.

In 1995, he made his first appearance in the American film, Sam Raimi’s Western Faster than Death with colleagues Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone and Leonardo DiCaprio. Shortly thereafter, he received critical and general public acclaim for his role as police officer Bud White in the Oscar-winning film LA – Top Secret.

For the film Insider: The Man Who Knew Too Much, he was nominated for an Academy Award for the first time and also for a Golden Globe.

Ridley Scott’s historical drama then became a worldwide hit Gladiator from 2000. For his portrayal of the Roman general Maximus, Crowe won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. The following year, he received his third Academy Award nomination, his first Golden Globe Award and the British Bafta Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of mentally ill genius mathematician John Nash in Ron Howard’s Pure Soul.

For the past ten years, the actor has been directing at the same time, he was the first to film Path of Hope in 2014, and last year he released his second film, Poker Face, about poker players. Most recently, Crowe portrayed the Italian priest and exorcist Gabriel Amorth in the horror film The Pope’s Exorcist.
