Thirty citizens of Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq crossed the Danube in a motor boat and tried to enter Romania illegally, being caught by border police in Mehedinti. They hoped to reach countries in Western Europe and had paid between 1,200 and 1,500 euros per person to those who transported them, according to News.ro.
“The border policemen from the Border Police Sector Gîrla Mare – Mehedinţi County found in the area of competence thirty citizens of Asian origin who crossed the Danube river with the help of a boat to enter Romania illegally, from Serbia. On 09.04. 2021, around 19.00, at the level of the Gîrla Mare Border Police Sector, an action took place regarding the prevention and combating of illegal migration in the area of competence. Thus, in Izvoare locality, near the river km 854, a group of thirty foreign citizens was discovered “, announces the Border Police.
They were taken to the sector headquarters for checks, where they were epidemiologically sorted by the medical crew who arrived on the spot.
During the first checks, border guards determined that twenty-seven adults, aged between 18 and 47, and three children, aged between 3 and 15, were citizens of Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq.
The foreign nationals said they crossed the border into Serbia in a motor boat driven by two Syrian citizens who returned to Serbia and paid between 1,200 and 1,500 euros for each person. At the same time, they also stated that they resorted to this method, with the intention of reaching their relatives in Western European countries.
The border police officers extended the checks, under the coordination of the prosecutor from the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Vanju Mare Court, to detect all the persons involved.
