Rolls-Royce has to replace Boeing 787 engines

European regulator EASA issued an airworthiness directive on Friday, which states that such engines must be ‘disconnected’, Bloomberg reports.

According to a spokesperson, five airlines and about four percent of the total 787-8 fleet are affected by the directive. Nine planes are still being looked at.

Errors in the design of the Trent 1000 engines have been haunting Rolls-Royce since 2016. According to the manufacturer, maintenance costs amount to 2.4 billion pounds in 2023. In 2020, the company expects the costs to rise to 550 million due to engine problems lb.

Airline companies that purchase the 787 have the choice of two engine types. In addition to the Trent 1000 from Rolls-Royce, it is the GEnx from General Electric. KLM and TUI fly, among others, chose the latter type.
