Research – Freiburg im Breisgau – New laboratory to better research the behavior of criminals – Knowledge

Freiburg (dpa) – The Max Planck Institute for Research into Crime, Security and Law opened a new laboratory on Friday, including special glasses for researching crime. According to the institute, “MAXLab Freiburg” is the first independent criminological research laboratory in the world to use so-called virtual reality technology in studies and experiments. Computers create a virtual environment.

The scientists want to find out how criminals make their decisions and what goes on inside them while they commit a crime. With the help of headsets and modern technology, test subjects are to be placed in certain situations. Among other things, the scientists observe people’s eyes and analyze their movement patterns.

The criminologists hope that the research results will provide concrete information on how crime can be prevented. The results should flow into the training of the police and judiciary and help to develop new strategies and laws.
