Recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia should be canceled by Russia, said the UN Security Council

Seven countries of the UN Security Council called on Russia to revoke the recognition of the occupied regions of Georgia – Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The statement was signed by the United States, Britain, France, Estonia, Ireland and Norway.

The countries expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that Russian troops continue to illegally stay in the occupied territories of Georgia and control Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Such actions, as noted in the document, violate international law.

The countries also condemned the provocations that Russia continues to commit, namely, increasing its military presence, carrying out illegal detentions, kidnapping the local population and restricting freedom of movement.

“Today we once again call on Russia to fully fulfill its obligations: immediately withdraw its troops and cancel its recognition of the so-called independence of the territories of Georgia, and not hinder the creation of an international security mechanism,” the statement of the seven countries says.
