Fukushima nuclear accident, court sentences Tepco to record compensation

July 13, 2022 10:01 am

Record repayment ordered: 13 trillion yen, the equivalent of 94.6 billion euros

According to the ruling, four Tepco executives will have to reimburse the operator – as requested by the shareholders – for the colossal losses suffered by the group due to the enormous costs incurred for the dismantling of the Fukushima Daichi plant and compensation to local residents, forced to evacuate after the accident.

The trial focused on the level of reliability of an assessment of seismic activity in the area performed by a government commission in 2002, nine years before the accident. Shareholders believe the valuation was credible and that the operators should have done more to safeguard the plant from a huge tsunami that could be expected. The former executives, on the other hand, claimed that the assessment was not reliable, so they could not predict the damage of a tsunami of that magnitude, and that there was still no time to take the necessary preventive measures.
