Health workers have been the great heroes who have been on the front lines of the fight against COVID-19 throughout the pandemic. For this reason they have been constantly honored.
Among the members of the front line there are hundreds of women who do titanic tasks. That is why Mattel, the toy creator and distributor, decided to launch a Barbie collection inspired by scientists, nurses and doctors.
The new Barbie line is spearheaded by the scientist behind the Oxford and AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine, Sarah Gilbert.
Sarah Gilbert is one of the most recognized vaccinologists in the world and a professor at the University of Oxford. The 59-year-old scientist spearheaded research to create AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine, which is currently one of the most effective against the delta variant of the virus.
The Gilbert-inspired doll sports some physical characteristics like those of the scientist, who said she hopes the toy will inspire boys and girls to study science careers.
″ I hope it is part of it being more normal for girls to think about scientific careers. I would like my doll to show children careers they may not know about, like that of a vaccinologist, “he said.
Women who inspire
In addition to the Sarah Gilbert figure, the collection is completed by five dolls inspired by women health workers who have carried out commendable tasks during the pandemic.
–Amy O’Sullivan, an emergency nurse who treated the first covid-19 patient in a New York hospital.
–Kirby White, an Australian doctor who pioneered the creation of a surgical gown that can be washed and reused by frontline workers during the pandemic.
–Jaqueline Goes de Jesus, a biomedical researcher – originally from Brazil – who was part of the research on the genetic sequencing of the new coronavirus.
–Audrey Cruz, a doctor in Las Vegas who seeks to eradicate discrimination. Chika Stacy Oriuwa, a psychiatry doctor at the University of Toronto who fights racism in healthcare.
