Prof. Iva Hristova: There is no lambda version of COVID-19 in Bulgaria

The new strain is spreading in South America, it is not yet the most contagious

There is no lambda version of COVID-19 in Bulgaria, despite the information that such cases have been detected in Austria and Spain. This was explained on the air of Nova TV by the director of the Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases Prof. Iva Hristova.

The lambda variant is spreading in South America, and in our country it is mainly the delta and alpha variant. Lambda is not one of the four main worrying options monitored by the World Health Organization, but it could be a threat in the future, said Prof. Hristova.

“It is not as infectious as the delta that has flooded the world,” explained Prof. Iva Hristova, explaining that vaccines respond very well against the delta variant, and there is still not enough research on lambda.

One in 3,000 of those vaccinated has COVID-19, studies show. “The effectiveness of vaccines is not 100%. There is a 4% chance that the vaccinated will get sick, but the fact is that they will get sick very lightly. In the United States, the big boom of the infection is from the delta variant and from the unvaccinated,” added on infectious and parasitic diseases.

She has been vaccinated herself and would take a third dose once approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). “The EMA is not delayed because the question is still whether the third dose is needed at all. It turns out that the body has an immune memory. We vaccinated are protected at the moment. We expect to see how things develop in the future,” said Prof. Hristova.

We walk at the foot of the top of another wave of coronavirus. “The question is when we will reach the peak, but in any case we will pass 2000 infected per day. Whether we will climb to the peak for a long time is not clear, but in September there will be dynamics. I very much hope that schools can work on schedule – online and present, but this is determined by the Minister of Health “, explained Prof. Hristova.

She explained that the younger ones were now ill. “There are very severe cases in young people. They should not be gullible. A number of factors contribute to boosting immunity and they are more susceptible to cytokine storm,” said Prof. Hristova and advised parents to vaccinate their children over 12 years.

In recent days, she has shown interest in vaccination. “Only vaccination can stop mutations and prevent infection,” she warned.
