Private Jet Flights: The Impact on Climate Change and Calls for Regulation

In the age of climate change, the debate is emblematic. On April 6, 2023, before the National Assembly, Clément Beaune proposed to revise upwards the “eco-contribution” for business aviation in 2024. The Minister of Transport and Energy Transition, however, remains hostile to the ban on private jet flights, supported by environmentalists. According to him, a total ban would also come up against “legal obstacles”.

In a report, l’ONG Greenpeace revealed that this type of theft in Europe increased by 64% in 2022 compared to the previous year. This is often a privileged clientele. Cannes, for example, is one of the most popular destinations for these jet users. We count those who have their own fleet, and those who call the companies directly. Indeed, some companies allow to rent private jets, this is the case of Airjet World or Flexjet.

Amsterdam airport plans to ban private jet flights by 2025-2026. At the microphone of RTL, the spokesperson for the airports of Nice Côte d’Azur, Aymeric Straub, recalls that various initiatives such as respect for trajectories, restrictions on the times when one can land and take off, or even the ban planes that are too noisy have already been put in place in the 3rd largest airport in France to reduce CO2 emissions.

Why are we talking about it. Private jets, how many flights in France each year? What do these flights represent in the carbon footprint of the aviation sector? Why do jet flights continue to increase?

Analyse. “Private jet flights continue to increase rapidly. In France, it is one in ten planes. This is very worrying, because they are 4 to 14 times more polluting than commercial planes and these are often flights quite short, with very few passengers. These kilometers could be done with other means of transport such as the TGV or the airliner”, says Charlène Fleury, coordinator and spokesperson for the “Stay on the ground” network.

“According to figures from the Ministry of Ecological Transition, private jets represented in 2019: 4,000 thousand tonnes of CO2, i.e. 1.6% of emissions in air traffic in France”, explains Arnaud Toush, who follows the aviation sector for RTL.
