Bis repeated, or almost. Like last week, egg farmers invited themselves to Carrefour Alma reindeer, to demand a fairer remuneration for their production, given the increase in the price of cereals on which they feed their hens. They charge at least 1 cent more per egg.

Last week the breeders were invited to the shelves. Except this time, they decided to target the store’s wallet, blocking all access to the shopping center, and therefore to the Carrefour hypermarket.

No more customers can come to do their shopping since the end of the morning, this Thursday, February 25, 2021. Consumers forced to turn back, which most do not appreciate. “How do we have a bite to eat this afternoon”, ask two construction workers who came to eat at lunchtime.

“Soon our henhouses will close”
The producers are blocking it. “It’s unfortunate but it’s the only way to make ourselves heard, we would prefer to stay at home to work”, explains one of them. “Today we are closing the store doors, but soon it is our henhouses that will close if we cannot make a good living from our work”, explains Benjamin, at the head of a farm of 200,000 laying hens in Ille-et-Vilaine, one of the largest in Brittany.

According to the producers, Carrefour, but also Auchan, Casino and Aldi would demand a 4% drop in prices. Farmers, on the contrary, are asking for an increase in order to pass on the increase in the costs of cereals, but also investments in favor of animal welfare, the transition to outdoor breeding or even organic farming. As stated on their banners, they do not ask “Only 1 euro cent per egg”.
