Singer and actress Olivia Newton-John died at the age of 73 from cancer on Monday, August 8. CNN with reference to the statement of her husband John Ystreling.
“Olivia Newton-John passed away peacefully this morning at her ranch in Southern California surrounded by family and friends. We ask everyone to respect the privacy of the family during this very difficult time,” the statement said.
CNN notes that Olivia Newton-John battled breast cancer for three decades and was diagnosed with spinal cancer in 2018.
The actress is best known for starring in the musical “Grease” (1978), where she played with John Travolta. Newton-John performed the film’s major musical hits.
Olivia Newton-John was born on September 26, 1948 in Australia. Considered one of the leading and most popular actresses and singers of the 1970s. Fifteen of her hits reached the top ten of the Billboard charts, five of them – number one. Her two solo albums have reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Eleven of her singles (including two platinum) and fourteen albums (including two platinum and four double platinum) have been certified gold by the RIAA. In total, over 100 million of her records were sold, which made her one of the best-selling performers. Four-time Grammy Award winner. In 1981, she received her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2006, Olivia Newton-John was awarded the highest state award – the Order of Australia.
Olivia Newton-John has also been a longtime environmental and animal rights activist. After suffering from breast cancer in 1992, she became an advocate for healthy food, fundraising, and public health awareness, involving various charities. Her business interests included launching several product lines for the Koala Blue brand, and Olivia was also the co-owner of Gaia Retreat & Spa in Australia.
