Second division soccer team Hamburger SV may allow more than the currently permitted 10,000 spectators in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup on March 2nd against Karlsruher SC. The parliamentary group of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen wants to campaign for this.

“In view of the upcoming HSV cup game on March 2, we are now also in favor of increasing the number of spectators,” explained Maryam Blumenthal, spokeswoman for sport and vocational training/apprenticeships for the Hamburg Greens, on Sunday. The party, which governs the city-state together with the SPD, wants to bring forward the relaxation of the corona rules for major sporting events planned for March 4 by two days because of the cup game. So far, only 10,000 spectators are allowed, but from the point of view of the Green faction, 25,000 would also be possible.

The sport can plan with significantly more spectators from March 4th. From March 20th, stadiums and halls can be fully utilized again. more

“Time to meet the fans”

According to Blumenthal, the Corona situation allows some leeway. An exemption in compliance with known safety standards would be justifiable due to the easing step decided at the Prime Ministers’ Conference and two days later. “It is time to accommodate the fans that Hamburg football has sorely missed over the past two years due to the many ghost games,” said the Green MP.

FC St. Pauli is already contesting its DFB Cup quarter-finals on March 1 – albeit away from Bundesliga club 1. FC Union Berlin.
