Police advise against trips to the Baltic Sea

The prospect of a refreshment in the Baltic Sea in summer temperatures, numerous short-term tourists lured the highways on Saturday morning and led to traffic jams that stretched for kilometers. At lunchtime, the police warned spontaneous and late-comers not to make their way to the coast. “The traffic situation on the A1 is catastrophic. Those who are still heading towards the Baltic Sea have to know what they are doing to themselves,” said a police spokesman.

In the meantime, the traffic had accumulated for up to 17 kilometers, but traffic on the remaining section between Hamburg and Lübeck was to be expected consistently. Due to the high number of visitors, there were long waiting times on the coasts: According to the police, almost all parking spaces in the Bay of Lübeck were occupied at around 12 noon.

Summer weather on the coast will pass again from Sunday

The beaches, such as in Timmendorf on the pier or in Scharbeutz, were already heavily used at this time. “The contingent has been used up, nothing more is possible,” said a police spokeswoman for the Schleswig-Holstein area service.

In addition to the call to refrain from visiting the beach, the police also cautioned holidaymakers. On the narrow promenades it is difficult to check whether the applicable corona regulations such as the minimum distance are observed. From Sunday morning, the German Weather Service is again expecting changeable weather. Rain showers at 23 degrees Celsius are also possible in the afternoons.
