“A major police action is underway in Vienna’s first district (in the center of the city). Officers are on the scene and are checking the situation.” With those words, the Vienna police reports that a huge police force has been deployed tonight. Shots were fired at six locations in the center.
The Vienna police have since confirmed that several perpetrators are involved. The first shooting took place in the Seitenstettengasse in Vienna. This was followed by five more shootings at other locations in the city. One victim has certainly died and one of the perpetrators was shot by the police.
The mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig has confirmed on the Austrian channel ORF that a civilian victim has been killed and a perpetrator has been killed. “The police are now investigating whether the perpetrator was wearing an explosive belt or not,” Ludwig said. Fifteen injured people have been taken to hospital. Seven people are seriously injured.
The spokesman for the Viennese emergency services Daniel Melcher talks about several deaths. “It is not yet clear how many victims there are, because we are still on the spot”, it sounds.
