Ivorian presidential election. The opposition wants to form a “transitional government”

L’opposition Ivorian announced Monday, November 2, 2020 that it had created a “National Transitional Council”, chaired by the former head of state Henri Konan Bédié, with a view to forming a “Transitional government” two days after the presidential election enamelled with violence which killed at least 9 people.

L’opposition “Announces the creation today of the National Transitional Council […] chaired by Mr. Henri Konan Bédié. The Council’s mission is to set up a transitional government in the coming hours ”, said former Prime Minister Pascal Affi N’Guessan, on behalf of all opposition to head of state Alassane Ouattara, who is expected to land a controversial third term.

A very contested for Alassane Ouattara

Without real opponent because of the boycott of the opposition, which judges a third term “Unconstitutional”, President Ouattara should win by an overwhelming score.

“The National Transitional Council will be responsible for preparing the framework for a fair, transparent and inclusive presidential election […] and to convene national meetings for national reconciliation with a view to the return to a definitive peace in Côte d’Ivoire ”, selon M. N’Guessan, “Noting the vacancy of the executive power with the end of the presidential mandate of Alassane Ouattara”.

Many violence marked the ballot

The opposition had already called Sunday for a “Civil transition” and “To the general mobilization of Ivorians to block the dictatorship and the forfeiture of the outgoing president”.

Violence has shaken the country since the vote while the results are announced in a trickle by the independent electoral commission.

Before the election, around thirty people had died in violence raising fears of major unrest, ten years after the crisis that followed the 2010 presidential election, killing 3,000, following the refusal of President Laurent Gbagbo, who was in power since 2000, to recognize his defeat against Alassane Ouattara.
