At the stop, trains pass at high speed. The driver of the pendolin thus had essentially no chance to prevent a collision with the child. People brought candles, flowers and toys to the scene of the accident on Friday and Saturday. Everyone wonders if this could have been prevented.
The tragedy would certainly not have happened if the children had used the subway on Friday. They would safely get to the other side of the housing estate where the school is. And they didn’t have to go risky across the tracks. “The girl went across the track outside the place to be crossed,” said police spokeswoman Michaela Raindlová.
In some places, the track is lined with a noise barrier and partly with a fence. But you can walk through them without any problems. “Here, in that case, the children probably imitated one of the adults,” says psychologist Sava Arabajiev.
Crossing the tracks is said to be quite common here. According to locals, it would help if the fencing were completely impenetrable. “However, it is not possible to install a fence in all places. For example, due to its accessibility to rescue services,” said Nela Friebová, a spokeswoman for the Railway Administration.
In the first 11 months of the year, 223 people died on the railway and 262 were injured. Many of them are as unnecessary as the schoolgirl in Pilsen on Friday.
