Flags of the United States, signs and caps sometimes carrying pro-Trump messages: thousands of people demonstrated Friday in California to demand the lifting of the containment in force for six weeks.

Governor Gavin Newsom said on Friday that the press understood the frustration behind the protests and the “anxiety” of the protesters “about the economy and the future of their families.” Newsom said he would make announcements on containment measures in a few days. California has recorded 91 deaths from the coronavirus in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 2,073. The United States is by far the country most affected in the world by the Covid-19 pandemic, with more than 64,000 deaths and one million cases, and its economy is almost at a standstill.
