NY will give $ 9 million to mental health providers to support older adults in communities hardest hit by COVID

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced Friday that the state selected six mental health providers who will receive up to $ 9 million over five years. This is to support community programs that identify and assist adults 55 and older whose independence or survival in the community is in jeopardy due to mental illness, substance use, or aging-related concerns.

The “Partnership to Support Aging in Communities Severely Affected by COVID-19” will focus on historically underserved and diverse communities that have been severely impacted by COVID-19 and will help people age in communities of their choice.

The program will create partnerships between OMH licensed providers and agencies authorized by the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) and the New York State Office for the Elderly (NYSOFA).

OMH issued a Request for Proposals in April 2021 inviting eligible applicants to develop and submit plans to support older New Yorkers in communities hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic who are facing challenges living independently due to to mental health, substance use or age-related problems.

The programs will help older adults age in either OMH supportive housing or other local senior housing. Funds can be used to expand or improve existing programs or develop a new program that meets all program requirements.

“As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect New York communities, we must do everything in our power to protect the most vulnerable,” said Governor Hochul. “This financial support will help older New Yorkers in communities that have been especially difficult by the pandemic, and the funding will ensure they have the assistance and support to live independently and with dignity.”

Information on all geriatric programs offered by OMH is available here.
