Kretschmann: Closures only when nothing else works

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – Despite the aggravated Corona situation, the state wants to keep schools open as long as possible. Schools would only be closed “if nothing else is possible, with incidences like we have in Saxony, around 2000,” said Baden-Württemberg’s Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann on Saturday on the sidelines of the Greens state party conference in Heidenheim. Currently, the nationwide incidence is 525.3 (as of Friday, 4:00 p.m.). According to the State Health Office, two municipalities are just below the incidence mark of 1000: the Schwarzwald-Baar district (975.7) and the Tuttlingen district (987.4).

The chief epidemiologist of the state health department, Stefan Brockmann, also assumes that the schools in the southwest will come through the Christmas season and the holidays without a lockdown and tightening of quarantine measures. “It would be wrong to say that the fourth corona wave stands or falls with the children and adolescents,” Brockmann told the Stuttgarter Zeitung and the Stuttgarter Nachrichten (Saturday). He doesn’t think school closings will tip the scales. He expects schools in the southwest to go regularly into the Christmas break and start teaching in the new year, Brockmann said.

In the debate about bans and restrictions, the teachers of the Baden-Württemberg high schools recently called for school closings not to be ruled out. “Every consideration for securing school operations must now be on the table,” said the state chairman of the Philologists Association of Baden-Württemberg (PhV BW), Ralf Scholl. “In view of the corona infection situation, school closings must no longer be a taboo.” According to its own information, the association represents around 9,000 high school teachers in Baden-Württemberg.
