Normund Jakušonoks Spends Time as Caregiver for Mother After Stroke

In a conversation with “Kas Jauns” magazine, Normunds Jakušonoks clarified where he had disappeared and why he didn’t please the listeners of the “Lájlůgīga tipa” New Year’s show “Lai laime nepariet 2024” with his voice and keyboard playing: “My mother Guna suddenly suffered a stroke right before Christmas and stayed on the bed. And since I’m taking care of her, I can’t take part in any major concert tour at the moment, but definitely during this year, when my mother’s health improves, I will join the “Good Guy” in some concerts.”

Likewise, on the very last day of the year, Normund Jakušonoks still managed to escape from home and go to the “Duel of New Year’s songs” held at VEF Culture Palace, where twelve hours before midnight he performed together with his colleagues Baiba Sipenieci-Gavari, Uldi Marhileviča, Olga Rajecka, Ufo, Elita Patmalnieci and many other popular artists. “Since it was a morning concert and it started at twelve, I was home after two in the day and could serve lunch to my mother,” he adds.

When asked how the musician copes, because taking care of a bedridden stroke patient is not easy, and who supports him at this stage of his life, Yakušonoks says: “Dad Eduardus and I cope with everything together. Mom’s stroke was sudden, at the age of 82, for the first time. It was at the end of the year that the acute stage happened and it was very complicated. It must be said that it is not easy. I never thought that taking care of a person is such a difficult and selfless job. But I do, mom is my priority in life right now. I am constantly by her side. I only go to the store or somewhere else as needed and I’m back again. Mom is sane – we can read, she can listen to my music.”

A doctor comes regularly for home visits, and physical therapist visits will soon begin. Normunds knows how to tell that in Riga there are very long queues for the arrival of a physiotherapist at home. “Having found myself in this situation, I made sure to wait at least two weeks. And a line is a line, I can’t use my name like that. What should be expected, should be expected. Because in reality there are no more people who work. I was told that one physiotherapist runs around the entire Pļavnieki micro-district. But I have already spoken, it will be our turn soon. Little by little, we are already getting mom out of bed, but her entire recovery is a very hard and long process. Let’s fight. It is the duty of children to take care of their parents,” says Normunds Jakušonoks, who is full of hope that his mother will recover from her stroke.
