Researchers have found no link between the popular weight-loss drugs Ozempic or Wegovy and suicidal thoughts. The research followed reports of suicides, suicidal thoughts and self-harm among users.
Users of the drugs even have fewer suicidal thoughts than a control group, the American study shows. Ozempic in particular has become popular in recent years; millions of people use it, resulting in global shortages.
The researchers looked at anonymized data from 1.8 million American users of Ozempic and Wegovy, both of which semaglutide as active substance. They were asked about suicidal thoughts in their guided process. Age and gender were also recorded. These data were compared with similar patients who use a waste medicine with a different active substance.
The research was funded by the US National Institutes of Health and published in the scientific journal Nature Medicine.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) also launched an investigation last year 150 the message of suicidal ideation and self-harm in Iceland. Ozempic, like Wegovy, is a product of pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk. The Danish drug manufacturer announced yesterday that it will invest one billion euros in biotech companies that conduct research into diseases related to excess weight. Novo Nordisk has quickly become one of the most valuable companies in Europe thanks to Wegovy and Ozempic and hopes to maintain its lead in the market.
